Sarah & Charles – Middleton Lodge, North Yorkshire Wedding. Although now living in London Sarah had grown up in the Darlington area and always wanted to return to the family church of St Augustines to be married, coupled with the beautiful location of Middleton Lodge, Charles and Sarah had their dream Wedding.
Two amazing locations such as these deserve a little background information, so here goes: St Augustines dates back to 1825, when the plot of land was purchased by Thomas Penswick, John Yates and William Hogarth for the princely sum of £55. the church building must have started early in 1826. The building, designed by Ignatius Bonomi, measured 70ft by 40 ft. It was built of limestone roofed with Westmoreland slates. Its design is described in most works of reference as ‘debased Gothic’. The building work progressed rapidly and by April 1827 was ready to opens a place of worship. The building itself is tucked away and can easily be missed, but once inside as you can see from the images it’s beauty is breathtaking. Middleton Lodge Estate was bought by The Allison Family in 1980 and over the last 30 years have painstakingly brought it back to life. Since 2008 they have opened the doors to wedding parties and private events. The main house is still a private home, and is available for private hire. The Coach House hotel is now open with ongoing restoration of the kitchen gardens and wider estate.
With Sarah, her Mum and four bridesmaids to attend to Lynne and Georgia from Replay Hair Salon, Darlington and Jo Leversuch from Make up by Jo, were kept busy all morning, but the atmosphere was calm and happy as every wedding morning should be. The gorgeous bouquets, buttonholes and table arrangements were all created by Lucy of Carl Banks in Darlington.
Meanwhile the guys were getting suited and booted with suits from Affleck and Moffatt of Duke Street Darlington in a separate wing of the Lodge before a quick rugby throw around in the grounds and then off to Darlington. A quick stop at Number Twenty 2 in Coniscliffe Road and then a short walk to St Augustines to greet the early arriving Wedding guests.
Sarah was chaffeured to the church by an old family friend in his Vintage Bentley. On arrival there was a little cloud burst but with umbrellas at the ready it really wasn’t a problem. The wedding ceremony and full mass, which was very emotional led by Father Seamus and the address was given by a good friend of Charles, James Isaac, before moving on to Middleton Lodge for the drinks reception and wedding breakfast. The wedding party were greeted by Alex and her fab team from Middleton Lodge, who made sure that everyone was very well looked after. The damp weather didn’t affect the mood of the day at all and the party atmosphere continued well into the night. The first dance was a rehearsed routine by Charles and Sarah to Lana del Ray’s, Young and Beautiful from the movie The Great Gatsby, and certainly impressed all their guests.
We enjoyed every minute of photographing Sarah and Charles’ Wedding day and then to round it all we received this great email!
“We just wanted to write to say thank you SO much for everything you did for us on our special day – we literally cannot thank you enough.
Jane – you were so kind, calm and collected all morning making us all feel at ease. It was a pleasure to have you share the morning with us. As I have said to Jo, it almost felt like you were both part of the family! You were also more than a photographer – on hand to guide us with all the little things – mum’s buttonhole, paracetamols for me, ensuring we were on track with timing etc. I really really cannot thank you enough.
Stan – Charlie feels exactly the same way. Your style made him feel at ease from the start, especially the fact that you had so enjoyed photographing a rugby player at another wedding! You were like one of the lads and I know one of the highlights of his day was taking those shots on the lawn and in 22 before the service!
If I am honest, the part of the wedding I was dreading the most was having to stand and have hundreds of photos taken and that taking over the day, but when we met you I know that my worries were unnecessary. On the day my expectations were exceeded. Your style together is perfect – so easy, so experienced that it doesn’t at all feel like an effort to have photo taken, so much so that standing in that room in Middleton with all our closest friends and family was one of the best parts of the day for me and I honestly never thought I would say that!
One of our best decisions of the whole wedding was hiring both of you and for that we really cannot thank you enough.
Thank you SO much. You really did make our day.”
